NEW TREASURER SOUGHT
following the move of the current treasurer to Dorset
MANAGEMENT OF SOUTHERN COUNTIES CHESS UNION
The management of SCCU is carried out, subject to the Annual General Meeting of Council, by an Executive Committee which includes officers (among them the treasurer) elected by the AGM. Executive Committee meetings normally take place in September and March and (briefly) before and after the AGM in June. Meetings are held in central London.
It is hoped to make an appointment at the AGM 23.6.07, but approaches well before this will be appreciated.
TREASURER'S JOB
The Treasurer is required to:
- Attend meetings of the SCCU AGM and Executive Committee wherever possible
- Maintain an overview of SCCU's financial affairs to ensure its financial viability
- Ensure that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place
- Ensure that proper financial records and procedures are maintained
- Collect English Chess Federation fees and SCCU's own fees
- Pay English Chess Federation fees and other bills when due
- Ensure that appropriate insurance is maintained
- Ensure that money held on deposit earns a reasonable rate of interest
- Act as one of the three cheque signatories
- Ensure regular bank reconciliations take place
- Present budgets and annual accounts to the Executive and AGM
- Draw attention to important points in the budgets and annual accounts
- Arrange for the annual accounts to be scrutinised by the independent examiner
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED
Formal accounting qualifications are not essential. The basic requirements are: -
- Willingness to devote the necessary time and effort. The time required varies according to the time of year, but on average is about three hours per week.
- Ability to keep reasonable financial records
- A knowledge of basic accounting [only about 200 entries need to be recorded in the books each year]
- Experience in using spreadsheets and email [the present treasurer sends out invoices/payment claims by email where possible]
- Awareness of information that needs to be kept for the annual independent financial review
EXPENSES
Post, stationery, telephone, travel and other expenses reasonably incurred are reimbursed.
